How to Change the Deck Belt on a Cub Cadet Zero-Turn Rider

A worn deck belt causes uneven cutting, slipping blades and squealing under load. Replacing it is straightforward with basic hand tools.

Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, shut the engine off and remove the key. Disconnect the spark plug wires before reaching under the deck.

Lower the deck to its lowest cutting position and remove the belt covers or shields. Photograph the existing belt routing so you can match it exactly on reassembly.

Relieve tension on the idler pulley with a breaker bar or the spring-loaded arm, then slip the old belt off the spindle and idler pulleys and the engine drive pulley.

Route the new belt following your photo, confirm it sits in every pulley groove, release the idler to apply tension, refit the shields and reconnect the spark plug wires.
